More and more often, environmental sustainability is being discussed, and Villa Franciacorta, in the wine sector in which it operates, is committed to achieving the goals set by the 2030 Agenda, adopted in 2015 by all member countries of the United Nations and containing the so-called Sustainable Development Goals.
Being sustainable
It is not just a mere statement of intent, but a philosophy that deeply permeates the entire company structure, starting from the green revision of the entire supply chain. We have voluntarily chosen to take responsibility towards current and future generations because "what we have today, we have borrowed from our children!"
Our Quality and Environmental Management System
To this end, Villa Franciacorta has implemented a Quality and Environmental Management System certified according to ISO 14001 standards, which establish the requirements of an environmental management system to improve performance through more efficient practices, taking into account all aspects of our production processes.
How we improve environmental performance
We have adopted a voluntary instrument that involves not only compliance with laws, knowledge and a sense of responsibility toward environmental problems, but also a commitment to mitigate them, expertise in how to do so, how to reduce impact and how to manage it, how, in short, to improve environmental performance. All of us, bar none, have the role of turning our environmental goals into reality. Villa Franciacorta acts daily in this direction.
1 - End poverty in all its forms everywhere
1.1 By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people worldwide, currently measured as those living on less than $1.25 a day.
Since 2010, the project "Una bollicina per un sorriso" (A Bubbly for a Smile) has been launched in Haiti: the entire proceeds from the sale of Riserva del Fondatore Rna 2004 are entirely donated for the construction of street schools in Haiti, providing clean clothes, education, and one meal a day.
Since 2020, "Ninos que esperan Santo Domingo" has been supported thanks to the sale of the unique collection of three bottles "cofanetto Dante", contributing to funding the foster home that welcomes young adults leaving the orphanage and continues their growth path before taking flight on their own.
2 - End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture
2.4 By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, protect ecosystems, enhance adaptability to climate change, extreme weather conditions, droughts, floods, and other disasters, and progressively improve soil quality.
2.5 Maintain the genetic diversity of seeds and cultivated plants.
All agricultural practices and choices aim to protect biodiversity through virtuous and sustainable practices that help safeguard and preserve ecosystems. Maintaining forested areas ensures biodiversity, rejects homogenization, and at the same time protects against hydrogeological disasters. Our actions aim to protect and ensure the genetic diversity of our protected and reproduced vines, including through cloning, in order to guarantee their survival and uniqueness.
3 - Ensure health and well-being for all at all ages
Our workplaces are safe. We personally care for our collaborators and verify that the companies we cooperate with also guarantee certain safety and protection standards for their employees.
We strive to provide properly ventilated, adequately furnished, comfortable, and beautiful workspaces for the pleasure of being inhabited. Where possible, even underground spaces are illuminated with natural light to protect the health of those who work there, as the right amount of daylight in the light-dark cycle is crucial for maintaining a proper biological rhythm.
4 - Provide quality, equitable, and inclusive education and learning opportunities for all
We provide scholarships and have always supported education for the deserving, believing that education is the highest form of social empowerment. We have also always been open to collaboration with universities and various higher institutions to welcome interns.
5 - Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
At our organization, men and women have equal rights, and there is no role that is denied to anyone with the same skills.
6 - Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
6.a Expand international cooperation and support to create activities and programs related to water and sanitation in developing countries by 2030, including water collection, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, and recycling and reuse technologies.
As a family, we have built wells in Burkina Faso.
7 - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all
7.2 Substantially increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy consumption by 2030.
We have installed photovoltaic panels that can produce up to 100 kW of energy, which, if in excess, is fed back into the grid.
8 - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.
8.4 Improve global resource efficiency in consumption and production, and strive to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation by 2030, in accordance with the Ten-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, with developed countries taking the lead.
8.6 Reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training by 2020.
8.8 Protect the right to work and promote a safe and secure working environment for all workers, including migrants, particularly women, and those in precarious employment.
8.9 Develop and implement policies by 2030 to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products.

We have been ISO 14001 certified since 2015, an internationally recognized certification for our entire production process, ensuring that every step is environmentally virtuous and respects workplace health and safety, as well as the final product. Some examples include:
- The glass we use is recycled and produced by certified glass manufacturers, demonstrating circular economy practices.
- The paper we use is sourced from FSC-certified mills and has the best environmental certifications.
- Our cork supplier is engaged in reforestation, social initiatives, and the recovery of used cork for reuse in sustainable construction and various products.
- Our aluminum is sourced from certified suppliers.
- Our cartons are certified for FSC and environmental sustainability.
- We use food-grade glycol for tank cooling.
- We reuse grape marc as a soil amendment.
13 - Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
The use of lighter glass bottles at Villa Franciacorta has led to significant reduction of CO2 emissions not only in production but also in transportation. The replication of this model by other companies has triggered a virtuous cycle that is not only sustainable but also generates significant value.
Cover cropping in our vineyards reduces CO2 emissions. A single cork stopper can sequester up to 562 grams of CO2, and we report annually on the amount of CO2 saved through various factors.
We have adopted certified environmental management systems as part of our efforts to combat climate change. Our approach includes increasing organic matter in the soil through proper agronomic practices to combat drought, using renewable energy sources, demanding certifications and environmental policies from suppliers, raising awareness and providing training on climate change for employees, suppliers, and stakeholders, defining criteria for energy efficiency, using renewable and recycled materials, reducing waste, respecting ecosystems and biodiversity, avoiding negative impacts in the areas where the company operates, and implementing risk management plans related to natural disasters for prevention, response, and recovery along the value chain. These are all examples of what Villa Franciacorta does to combat climate change, because as Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, 'What we do is only a drop in the ocean, but if we didn't do it, the ocean would be one drop less.'
14 - Preserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development

The protection of biodiversity at Villa Franciacorta is our distinctive feature, and we are committed to enriching and promoting it. The presence of bees, an important biological indicator, measures the healthiness of the place. We protect insects in general, arthropods, and microarthropods in the soil through good agronomic practices, recognizing that only through them can the balance of the entire vineyard system be ensured. Constant monitoring of organic matter and maintaining excellent levels of it confirm the correct approach and excellent biodiversity of the populations inhabiting the soil. In the cellar, research has also led to the protection of the biodiversity of existing yeast populations through selection and patent registration under the Villa Franciacorta brand. Their reproduction and use not only protect and safeguard their uniqueness but also characterize our wines, making them highly distinctive.

Sustainable Development Goals
Endorsed by 193 countries in September 2015, the SDGs are part of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They are the result of governments and citizens around the world working together to establish a new global model that will end poverty, provide prosperity and well-being for all, protect the environment and combat climate change.
Villa Franciacorta has achieved 11 of the 17 planned, and the only ones not achieved are not dependent on the company, but are the sole preserve of nations and international policies.
